TMJ stands for the temporomandibular joint and TMD stands for temporomandibular joint dysfunction. The TMJs are the two tiny joints in the front of the ears that attach the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull. These joints allow us to perform such “taken for granted” functions as opening and closing the mouth, chewing, swallowing, breathing, kissing and talking.
What causes TMD?
There are many possible causes of TMD and they include injury such as whiplash, disease such as arthritis, dental problems such as poor bite, prolonged jaw opening, oral habits, posture habits and psychosocial stressors.
What are the symptoms of TMD?
Why Choose TherapySolutions for conservative management of TMD and headaches?
Our therapists have advanced training in manual therapies that are helpful in addressing TMD and headache symptoms. These include myofascial release and craniosacral therapy which use very gentle hands on techniques that engage prolonged stretching of the soft tissues to reduce tension. We also use manual lymphatic drainage, which is also a very light techniques that is useful for reducing pain and any swelling associated with the pain. We also have put together an education program to teach you about these conditions and specific exercises you can do to control them.
